In about 2 weeks and some change (June 15th) we’ll get to finally touch the brand new Microsoft Surface pro 5.

Microsoft says that the new Surface Pro has 13.5 hours of battery life, LTE option, and a new stylus that can sense title (whaattt?). Yes I know you’re thinking Apple Pen did that forever ago. keep in mind that even though the price of the surface is now level with the iPad, the accessories aren’t, that being said Microsoft announced the Surface Pro 5 Pen will be $99 sold separately. (Ok ignore my previous statement) They’ve changed the pressure sensitivity to 4096 and decreased the activation force, making it feel like an actual pen that writes when you do and not a few minutes after (Exaggerated). So is it worth an extra $99? I think so. Microsoft said the reason they’re selling separately is because you can still use your MSP4-Pen.

The new pro will be super thin and boasts a new hinge style that won’t snap if you push it too hard (for safety reasons). The pictures don’t tell us much however Microsoft say’s it’ll sit nearly flat at a shocking 165 angle.

Is a laptop or a tablet?

What does help give the New Surface Pro some laptop credentials, however, is its upgraded specs. The range moves to Intel’s ‘Kaby Lake’ chipsets with the following options:

• Core m3-7Y30 with HD Graphics 615
• Core i5-7300U with HD Graphics 620
• Core i7-7660U with Iris Plus Graphics 640

Interestingly both the m3 and i5 variants will be fanless and therefore silent. Microsoft claims the top end i7 model will be quieter than ever, though it does pack a fan which also accounts for an extra 20g in overall weight.

What is unchanged are RAM options (4GB, 8GB or 16GB of 1866Mhz LPDDR3) and storage (128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB via a PCIe NVMe SSD).

Let’s also not forget that the highest priced option comes with an insane 1TB of storage, easily destroying Apple’s measly 256GB iPad pro. I guess the fact that you can install and use software on it like a laptop helps a bit.

The Operating System

At launch the New Surface Pro will ship with Windows 10 Pro, but Microsoft has confirmed it will also sell the range with Windows 10 S eventually. Then again why you’d want to opt for the less competent Windows 10 S makes no sense.

Conclusion

The new Microsoft Surface Pro 5 is a small step for Microsoft and a large leap for Surface Pro 3 users. It’s a massive upgrade from the 3 with the new faster processors, battery life enhancement, better screen, and reinforced hinge. The question is now which one will you choose?
