Why your desktop icons are killing your performance!

Many many years ago when I was still in school, I used to have this large wooden desk that we bought used from a neighbor that was moving out. It had quite the behemoth of a desktop. Of course, I had to use this to its full extent. So every time I started working I would lay everything out and as I’m working I would look for the paper that I needed. Then I would try to rearrange the array of papers and utensils along with the cup if pens and pencils, the stapler, the hole puncher, and a 12-year-old desk lamp.

As you can imagine this took a good amount of time, every single time. Now imagine doing it 1000x/Second. At that point, you might as well just quit school and try your luck organizing logos at an elementary school.

The scenario above happens every single time your desktop comes up on your screen. Whether you’re working on an application and minimizing it, or your desktop is starting up. When it’s loaded with icons, you dramatically decrease the speed of your running applications. Let alone attempting to open anything on the desktop. This is because every time you touch your desktop, the computer has to process through all the icons to get to where you want.

Desktop icons can slow down a computer for several reasons. First, the more icons you have on your desktop, the more resources your computer has to use to display them. This can cause your computer to run more slowly, especially if you have a lot of high-resolution icons or if your computer has limited resources.

Another reason desktop icons can slow down a computer is that they can take up a lot of space on your hard drive. Every icon on your desktop is actually a file that is stored on your computer, and the more icons you have, the more space they take up. This can cause your computer to run more slowly, especially if you have a limited amount of storage space.

In addition, the more icons you have on your desktop, the more cluttered and disorganized your desktop can become. This can make it more difficult to find the files and programs you need, which can lead to more time spent searching for them. This can also cause you to open more programs and files than you need, which can further slow down your computer.

To help speed up your computer, you can try to minimize the number of icons on your desktop. You can do this by organizing your files and programs into folders and placing them on your desktop instead of individual icons. You can also try to use programs like CCleaner or CleanMyPC to free up space on your hard drive by removing unnecessary files and programs.

Another way to speed up your computer is to change the size of the icons on your desktop. By default, most icons are set to a large size, which can take up a lot of space and slow down your computer. By reducing the size of the icons, you can free up more space and make it easier to find the files and programs you need.

You can also try to change the settings on your computer to make it run more efficiently. For example, you can try to adjust the visual effects settings or turn off unnecessary programs and services that are running in the background. This can help to free up more resources and speed up your computer.

Finally, you can try to maintain your computer regularly by running regular scans, checks, and updates. This can help to keep your computer running smoothly and efficiently.

In conclusion, desktop icons can slow down a computer for several reasons, including the use of resources, storage space, and disorganization. By minimizing the number of icons on your desktop, organizing your files and programs, reducing the size of icons, and maintaining your computer, you can help to speed up your computer and make it run more efficiently.

As always, thanks for reading.
